Barcoding in Shop Floor Insight has two parts:

  • Symbology: The visual format of the barcode.
  • Data encoding: The text contained in the barcode and how Shop Floor Insight interprets it.

Symbology

Shop Floor Insight receives decoded barcode text from the scanner. The scanner must support the symbology you choose, such as Code 39, Code 128, QR, or Data Matrix. Typically barcodes are printed with Code 39 which allows the user of cheaper laser scanners.

For example, Code 39 and QR can both represent /R00001F4A%. Either can work if the scanner reads it and sends that exact text to the Shop Floor Insight interface. Changing the symbology does not change what the barcode does.

When configuring a scanner for the web interface, configure it to send the barcode as keyboard input. Disable added Enter, carriage return, line feed, or other unwanted characters.

Data Encoding

Standard Shop Floor Insight Barcodes

Standard Shop Floor Insight barcodes identify a record in Shop Floor Barcode Entries in Business Central. The barcode contains a short identifier; the associated entry stores the employee, operation, activity, or other details.

The default format is /XHHHHHHHH%:

Printing Barcodes

Use the supplied Shop Floor Insight barcode reports, or have your developer include SFI-generated barcode values in custom reports.

For Code 39, the rendering method may require start and stop asterisks. For example, the renderer may receive */R00001F4A%*, while the scanner must return /R00001F4A%. The asterisks are rendering markers, not part of the SFI barcode value.

Troubleshooting

  • Scanner does not read the barcode: Check that the scanner supports and has enabled the symbology, and check print quality.
  • Scanner beeps, but the interface does not respond: Scan into a text editor. Verify the complete value, including /, %, and all eight hexadecimal characters. Check for unwanted scanner prefixes or suffixes.
  • Barcode entry is missing or invalid: Confirm the barcode belongs to the current company and environment. If its Barcode Entry was deleted during cleanup, reprint the barcode.
  • Barcode is recognized, but the expected action does not occur: Check the current screen, selected time card, client configuration, and any required workflow or module setup.
