Copy Values in Product Configurator

You are here:

Copy Values is a feature that allows you to copy option values (choice, quantity, or both) between a parent configuration and its sub-configurations. You can copy values from the parent into a sub-configuration, or from a sub-configuration back into its parent.

Copying is based on matching option codes. For values to be copied between a parent and sub-configuration, both must have an option with the same code. If copying choices, the relevant choices must also exist in the configuration being copied to; if a choice does not exist there, it cannot be copied and the user is notified.

Set up Copy Values

Copy from Parent (parent to sub-configuration)

  1. Navigate to the Configurator Item Categories page in Business Central.
  2. Open the sub-configuration category and navigate to the Configurator Options page.
  3. Select the option you want to inherit values from the parent and set the Copy From Parent field to one of the following:
    • Choice: Copies the choice code from the matching option in the parent configuration.
    • Quantity: Copies the quantity per unit from the matching option in the parent configuration.
    • Choice & Quantity: Copies both the choice code and quantity per unit from the matching option in the parent configuration.

If left blank, nothing will copy.

Copy from Sub-Configuration (sub-configuration to parent)

  1. Navigate to the Configurator Item Categories page in Business Central.
  2. Open the parent configuration category and navigate to the Configurator Options page.
  3. Select the option you want to copy values from the sub-configuration and set the Copy From Sub-Configuration field to one of the following:
    • Choice: Copies the choice code from the matching option in the sub-configuration.
    • Quantity: Copies the quantity per unit from the matching option in the sub-configuration.
    • Choice & Quantity: Copies both the choice code and quantity per unit from sub-configuration.

If left blank, nothing will copy.

How it works

When a user builds a configuration in the BOM Designer and selects an option that triggers a sub-configuration, the sub-configuration opens. At that point, any options in the sub-configuration with Copy From Parent set automatically inherits their values from the matching options in the parent.

When the user closes the sub-configuration and returns to the parent, any options in the parent with Copy From Sub-Configuration set automatically updates with the values from the matching options in the sub-configuration. This happens every time the sub-configuration is closed.

Refresh values after the sub-configuration has been created

The copy from parent logic runs when the sub-configuration is first initialized. If the sub-configuration has already been created and you return to it, values do not automatically refresh. To manually refresh, open the sub-configuration from the parent configuration and select Copy from Parent. This updates the sub-configuration with the current values from the parent.

Error handling

If a choice being copied does not exist in the destination configuration, the user receives a message identifying which options and choices could not be copied. This does not prevent the sub-configuration from loading or being completed; the user must review the message and address the missing values manually.
