Run Warehouse Insight on Your Windows Desktop
You may want to run Warehouse Insight on your Windows desktop for testing/training purposes without the need for a mobile device. You have two options depending on the operating system of the mobile device you intend to use.
- Use an Android emulator to simulate using an Android mobile device.
- Use the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client to simulate using a Windows mobile device.
This article describes the setup process for both options.
Note
Microsoft has deprecated and ceased development of their Windows Mobile operating systems and all major device manufacturers have moved to Android. Because of this, Insight Works is no longer updating the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client. The final release of the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client is for Warehouse Insight version 2.6. If you are using Warehouse Insight version 2.7 or newer, consider using an Android emulator.
Android Emulator
An Android emulator simulates an Android device on your computer. Insight Works does not have a purpose-built Android emulator, but there are many free and paid options available online. Two popular and free emulators are MEmu and Bluestacks. These emulators are easy to install and use, but they will occasionally display ads to the user. Free emulators are also available from Microsoft and Google, though these require more technical knowledge to set up and use.
DISCLAIMER
Insight Works is not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with the developers of the emulators mentioned above. The use of their software is done at your own discretion and risk.
The following sections describe how to install and configure Warehouse Insight using an Android emulator.
Prerequisites
You must complete the following prerequisites before installing and configuring Warehouse Insight in the emulator.
- Install the Warehouse Insight app in Business Central.
- Run the Warehouse Insight Setup Wizard in Business Central.
- Create at least one device configuration.
- Install your emulator of choice using the instructions from the vendor’s website.
Install Warehouse Insight in the Emulator
Complete the following to install Warehouse Insight in the emulator.
- In Business Central, run the Warehouse Insight Installation Report. The report request page will open.
- Copy the URL from the Android APK URL field and paste it into a new browser window. The Warehouse Insight APK file will be downloaded to your computer.
- Using the downloaded APK file, install Warehouse Insight in the emulator. The installation method may vary depending on your emulator, refer to the vendor’s website or documentation for more detailed instructions. Many emulators support drag-and-drop installation of APK files.
- Once the Warehouse Insight application has been installed in the emulator, proceed to the next section.
Configure Warehouse Insight in the Emulator
Complete the following to configure Warehouse Insight in the emulator.
- In the emulator, open Warehouse Insight. The first time you open Warehouse Insight the welcome screen will be displayed.
- Select Manual Configuration. The System tab of the configuration menu will be displayed.
- Enter the following information:
- Configuration Code: Enter the Warehouse Insight Device Configuration Code you want to use. To find the available configuration codes, go to the Warehouse Insight Device Configurations page in Business Central.
- Service Type: Choose the type of web service connection. The default is “OData” and should only be changed to “SOAP” in specific circumstances for On-Premises Business Central installations. If you are unsure which service type to use, please contact support at support@dmsiworks.com.
- Web Service: Enter the web service URL for your Business Central environment. To find the web service URL in Business Central, run the Warehouse Insight Device Configuration Report and copy the URL from the OData Service URL field of the report request page. Copy the Web Service URL instead if you are using the SOAP service type.
- Company Name: Enter the company name from Business Central. To find the company name, go to the Companies page in Business Central. Make sure to use the actual company name, not the display name.
- Select ☰ Menu > Logins, then choose the Login Method. For more information about the available login methods, see these articles:
- Select ☰ Menu > Close, then select Yes to save changes. Warehouse Insight will reload and you may be prompted to enter your credentials depending on the login method.
- If applicable, enter your credentials and select Sign In. You will be signed in and Warehouse Insight will be ready to use.
Warehouse Insight Desktop Client
The Warehouse Insight Desktop Client simulates a Windows mobile device on your computer. It is intended for use with on-premise installations and requires an IIS web service for Warehouse Insight. For more information, see this article: Warehouse Insight Web Service Installation – Insight Works Knowledge Base (dmsiworks.com)
If Warehouse Insight was installed by Insight Works in an On-Premises environment, the Desktop Client may already be installed on the Business Central server. If you have installed Warehouse Insight yourself, you will also need to install the Desktop Client.
Prerequisites
You must complete the following prerequisites before installing and configuring the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client.
- Install the Warehouse Insight app or objects depending on your version of Navision or Business Central.
- Run the Warehouse Insight Setup Wizard or import the required configuration data depending on your version of Navision or Business Central.
- Create at least one device configuration.
Install the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client
Complete the following to install the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client.
- Run the Desktop Client installer. If you do not have the installer, please contact support@dmsiworks.com.
- A new WHI shortcut will be added to your desktop.
- Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Insight Works\WHI, then right-click the Desktop Client folder and select Properties > Security.
- Select Edit, then choose the Users group and select Allow for the Full control checkbox. This will give your user permission to edit the configuration for the Desktop Client.

Complete the following to configure the Warehouse Insight Desktop Client.
- Open the Desktop Client.
- Select Options > Configure.
- On the System tab, enter the following information:
- Configuration Code: Enter the Warehouse Insight Device Configuration Code you want to use. To find the available configuration codes, go to the Warehouse Insight Device Configurations page in Business Central.

- Company Name: Enter the company name from Business Central. To find the company name, go to the Companies page in Business Central. Make sure to use the actual company name, not the display name.
- On the Logins tab, choose the Login Method and enter your default credentials if desired. The available login methods will depend on the the credential type of the service tier that Warehouse Insight is connecting through and the configuration of the IIS web service. If you require assistance with this, contact support at support@dmsiworks.com.
- Select Close and then Yes when prompted to save your settings.
- The Desktop Client will reload and you may be prompted to enter your credentials depending on the login method.
- If applicable, enter your credentials and select Sign In. You will be signed in and Warehouse Insight will be ready to use.
