Configuring Nominal Dimensions and Symmetric/Asymmetric Tolerances

You are here:

Quality Inspector can be used to validate measured dimensions against engineering tolerances. For dimensional inspections, the measured value is typically configured as a Decimal Quality Inspection Field, with the acceptable measurement range defined by the field or template’s grade conditions. Quality Inspection Fields support Decimal values for numerical measurements.

For drawing-based inspections, this configuration is commonly used with a Balloon / Bubble Quality Inspection Template so each measurement can be associated with its drawing characteristic or balloon number.

Convert a nominal dimension and tolerance to a pass condition

Quality Inspector numeric grade conditions use Business Central filter-style expressions. For a dimensional tolerance, calculate the lowest and highest acceptable measurement and enter them as an interval using ...

Microsoft documents .. as the Business Central interval operator. The endpoints are included in the range.

Drawing specification Minimum Maximum Pass condition
.125 ± .002 0.123 0.127 0.123..0.127
.125 -.002 / +.010 0.123 0.135 0.123..0.135
.125 ± .001 0.124 0.126 0.124..0.126
.125 -.001 / +.008 0.124 0.133 0.124..0.133

For a symmetric tolerance, subtract and add the same tolerance to the nominal dimension. For example:

0.125 ± 0.002 → 0.123..0.127

For an asymmetric tolerance, apply the lower and upper tolerances independently:

0.125 -0.002 / +0.010 → 0.123..0.135

Configure the tolerance in Quality Inspector

The pass condition can be configured in either of two places:

  1. Quality Inspection Field: Configure the grade condition on the field when the same tolerance is commonly reused. Fields can define default grade conditions that are subsequently copied to templates.
  2. Quality Inspection Template: After adding the field to the template, change the Pass condition for that specific characteristic. Template-level conditions can differ from the defaults defined on the Quality Inspection Field.

For large dimensional inspection plans, this allows you to choose between creating dedicated fields for particular dimensions and tolerances or reusing measurement fields and configuring the specific tolerance on individual template lines.

Using dimensions stored elsewhere

When the nominal dimension or tolerance already exists elsewhere in Business Central, the condition does not necessarily have to be hard-coded.

Quality Inspector conditions can reference:

  • Item fields with expressions such as [Item:FieldName].
  • Item Attributes with expressions such as [Attribute:AttributeName].
  • Values in other tables using Lookup(...).
  • Embedded calculations that calculate the upper and lower limits from stored specification values.

This can be useful when dimensions vary by item, revision, specification, or other product data.
