Automate Production

Automate Production

You are here:

Quality Inspector has built-in production order automation for common scenarios of using a production order with quality inspection tests. Production Automation requires Business Central 15 or newer.

For this section of documentation, a template with two fields and the out-of-box source configuration mappings related to production are used.

You require the following:

  • Grades configured.
  • At least one template with at least one field.
  • Appropriate source configuration for the item ledger entry, and/or the item journal line, and/or the production order line, depending on what source details need to be captured.
  • A quality inspection assignment from the source configuration to the template.
Field Template Code Description Allowable Values Pass Pass Desc.
VISUAL Visual Pass,Fail
COLOR Color Blue,Red,Green

Create a test automatically when output is posted

Creating a test when output is posted is done for quality controls on either intermediate or final steps and used before putting away inventory or shipping inventory. This is done when quality inspection is done post-production.

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Setup in Business Central.
  2. Locate the Create Test field and select When Output is Posted in the Production Automation section.

When output is posted with the output journal, a test is created when there is an appropriately found assignment.

Create a test automatically when a production order is released

Creating a test automatically when a production order is released is done when the quality inspection test is created as a pre-requisite to other steps. This is done when there is a quality inspection step during the production process.

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Setup in Business Central.
  2. Locate the Create Test field and select When Output is Posted in the section Production Automation.

Validate production

Require a finished test before finishing the production order

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Setup in Business Central.
  2. Locate the production validation section and select Before Finish.

Before a production order changes its status to Finished, it validates that a test exists and that it is finished. If no test exists, it fails; if a test exists but is open, it fails.

Require a finished test before every X units

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Setup in Business Central.
  2. Locate the Production Validation section and select Every X Units.
  3. Define the enabled quantity fields for every x units, as needed.

Quantities are expected to be in the base unit of measure.

When Find Behavior is set to tracking, this feature uses the production order and operation number when determining the quantities produced.

Require a finished test before every X units example

If you configure your system for every 5 units and 4 are produced, a test is not required. If 5 units are produced, a test is required. If 6 units are produced, a second test is not required; if 10 units are produced, a second test is required.

Require a finished test before every x period of time

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Setup in Business Central.
  2. Locate the Production Validation section and select Every X Period of Time.
  3. Define the enabled quantity field for every x Period of Time, as needed.

When Find Behavior is set to tracking, this feature uses the production order and operation number when determining the quantities produced.

Require a finished test before every x period of time example

If you configure your system for every 5 hours and 1 is produced in the first hour, a test is not required. If another 1 is produced after 5 hours, a test is required. If 6 are produced in the same hour, a second test is not required. If 1 is produced after 10 hours from first output, a second test is required.

Production Update Control

This feature works as designed in Business Central 16 and newer. Using this feature in versions 13 through 15 may require a per-tenant-extension in some circumstances.

Set this to Enable so that the document follows the production order as it goes through the statuses. If it is important that a quality inspection test show the status of Finished, or if there are different finished production order numbers than released production order numbers and it’s also important to show that on the test itself, use Enable. If neither of these are important, set to Do not update to improve performance.
