First Article Inspection Report (FAIR Form 3)

You are here:

Quality Inspector provides an example First Article Inspection Report 3 (FAIR Form 3) to assist with sites that require additional reporting for AS9102 or similar standards. First Article Inspection Form 3 is the Characteristic Accountability, Verification, and Compatibility Evaluation form.

First Article Inspection reports refer to technical specification drawings that have numbered callouts, also known as “Balloon” numbers or “Bubble” numbers.

To gain access to the First Article Inspection Report Form 3, configure the Quality Inspection template to be a balloon/bubble template:

  1. Navigate to the Quality Inspection Template page in Business Central.
  2. Select the template to modify.
  3. Select Balloon / Bubble in the Template Type field.
  1. Modify the following fields for each of the lines:
    • Ballon No./Characteristic No.: Input the required balloon number.
    • Characteristic Designator: Input the designator as needed(e.g., minor, major, critical).
  2. Select a line, select Instructions, and input the instruction if needed (repeat for each line as needed; the first instruction line is used as the report’s section 6 drawing reference location).
  3. Select Existing Tests and select the required test.
  4. Select Reports / First Article Inspection (Form 3).
  5. Select Preview & Close.

The following table describes where each standard section on FORM 3 is populated from in Business Central:

FAIR Form 3 Section What is it How this information is populated
1 Part Number. This should match the same part number used in Forms 1 and 2. The “Source Item No.” for the quality inspection test itself, which in turn relates to a Business Central item record.
2 Part Name. This should also match the part name used in Forms 1 and 2. The item card’s description for the related Source Item No. on the quality inspection test.
3 Serial Number.

This refers to the serial number of the sample being tested.

Typically, this report is only used on serialized items.

If Source Serial No. on the test is not blank, and Source Lot No. is blank, Source Serial No. is used.

If Source Serial No. and Source Lot No. are both defined on the test, both are printed (the lot number separated by a dash first, then the serial number).

If only Source Lot No. is configured, then only Source Lot No. is displayed.

If neither Source Lot No. nor Source Serial No. are defined on the test, then “N/A” is printed instead.

4 FAIR Number.

This refers to the test number itself.

This is the Quality Inspection test number.
5 Characteristic No. / Bubble No. / Balloon No. / Callout No.

This refers to the specific balloon number on the technical specification for that part.

This field refers to the Balloon No. field from the Quality Inspection Template.

If the Balloon No. field is blank, then it uses the description field from the test line.

Since the Balloon number is specific to a drawing for a quality inspection template, it is applied to the template the balloon number is only configured on the template and is not on the re-usable field.

The field is available when the Template Type is configured to be a balloon template.

6 Reference Location.

This is the location on the drawing or model of where the balloon callout can be found. This typically includes the page, section, and in some cases the quadrant. It could also be a unique identifier for a Digital Product Definition (DPD).

This comes from the first work instruction line for the quality specification field on the template.

Navigate to the Quality Inspection Template, select the specification line, and select “Instructions”. The first line instruction here should refer to the reference location in the drawing. Only the first line is used for the drawing location; other work instruction lines are not included.

It is common to include the sheet no, section, and quadrant; however, there is no specific standard that is enforced.

7 Characteristic Designator.

This is a class of characteristic designator, there is no specific standard in AS9102 for specific values, but this typically refers to special requirements. It would be typical to note “KC” (Key Characteristic), “CI” (Critical Item)”, or even just ‘major’, or ‘structural’. These are typically also referenced on the balloon drawing beside the balloon number itself.

This is the Characteristic Designator field from the Quality Inspection Template on the specification line in the template itself.

The field is available when the Template Type is configured to be a balloon template.

8 Requirement.

This is the engineering, inspection, or process features including tolerances.

The pass description.

Each grade for each specification on each template has configurable pass conditions and pass condition descriptions.

The pass condition description is used here and should include the tolerances in that description.

Units of measure are often listed in the requirement and can be added as part of the description.

9 Results.

In most scenarios this is the test value and should represent the measured value.

This is the separated into the Test Value and the grade desciption (typically describes the pass/fail).
10 Designed / Qualified Tooling. Configured designed tools by navigating to the Quality Inspection Templates, choosing the specification, and choosing Tools.

Specific tool identification is recorded on the test itself by navigating to the Quality Inspection Test, selecting Record Tool Usage, and selecting the used tools.

In the scenario of tools for the First Article Inspection, there is typically only one tool used; however, the report and the system support multiple tools.

If the tool has a description, that is used instead of the No.; however, if the description is blank then the No. is used.

If there was a recorded tool identification on the test, the tool identification is added in parentheses.

If multiple tools are designed, they are separated by commas.

If no tools are designed, nothing is displayed.

The report lists all designed tools configured on the template.

11 Nonconformance Number In the default report, this is the NCR Test No. field on the quality inspection test line for a given test.
12 Signature / Contact Details This is the COA Contact details as configured on the Quality Inspector Setup page.
13 Date This is the Finished Date on the Quality Inspection test.
14 Additional Specification Comments This column is populated with the recorded note for that specification on the test itself. Navigate to the Quality Inspection test, locate the Notes section, and enter the notes there.
