Assign Outbound Serial Number at Shipping Time

Assign Outbound Serial Number at Shipping Time

You are here:

Serialized or lot tracked items that require a tracking number need to have their item tracking number assigned before posting a shipment. Items that are set up to require inbound tracking codes must have their serial numbers assigned when received. If an item is set to require both inbound and outbound tracking, filling in only an outbound tracking number will still result in a failure to find the inbound tracking entry on the package worksheet.

  • If the tracking number does not exist in the system, the message “unknown scan: 12345678” will display when scanning the tracking number in the package worksheet. By default, the package worksheet looks for existing tracking numbers.
  • If Tracking Behavior is set to “Skip” in Dynamic Ship Setup, tracking numbers assigned on the sales order or warehouse pick are ready to use and do not need to be entered during shipping.
  • If you are waiting until shipment time to assign the tracking number, alter the barcode rule to tell it that the tracking number does not need to be validated against the list of existing numbers. You must personalize the Barcode Rules page to see the Validate Serial No, Validate Lot No, and Persistent Item columns.

Create a serial number assignment barcode rule

    1. Copy the existing Serial No. line to a new line.
    2. Give the new line a unique Rule ID.
    3. Set the Run Order to a smaller number than the line it was copied from.
    4. Uncheck Validate Serial No.
    5. Check Persistent Item.

Create a lot number assignment barcode rule

    1. Copy the existing Lot No. line to a new line.
    2. Give the new line a unique Rule ID.
    3. Set the Run Order to a smaller number than the line it was copied from.
    4. Uncheck Validate Serial No.
    5. Check Persistent Item.
