Recording Notes in Quality Inspector

Quality Inspector supports notes at two practical levels:

1. Measurement line notes entered in the Note field for an individual test line or test value.
2. Business Central FactBox notes entered in the standard Notes FactBox for a test, NCR, tool usage record, configuration record, or other page that exposes the FactBox.

Record a measurement line note

Use a measurement line note when the comment explains a specific inspection result, reading, characteristic, sample, or test line.

1. Open the quality inspection test that contains the measurement line.
2. In the test lines, find the Note column.
   • If the column is not visible, personalize the page to show Note, or confirm that your Quality Inspector permission does not hide line notes.
3. Enter the note directly in the Note field for the line.
4. To enter or review longer text, choose the assist-edit button on the Note field. Quality Inspector opens the Change Text dialog where you can edit multi-line text.
5. Choose OK to save the text.

The same measurement note is also available from the Quality Inspection Test Values page. Editing the Note field there updates the note for the associated test line.

Record a page-level note in the Notes FactBox

Use a page-level note when the comment applies to the whole record rather than one measurement line. Examples include an overall inspection note on the test header, a note on an NCR, or a note on a configuration record.

1. Open the record page, such as the quality inspection test card or list.
2. Open the Notes FactBox.
3. Add a note using the standard Business Central note action.
4. Save the note.

Quality Inspector exposes the standard Business Central Notes FactBox on several pages, including the test card, test list, NCR card, NCR list, test values, tool usage pages, and several setup/configuration pages.

Permissions and status rules

Line note visibility and editability are controlled by the Quality Inspector Edit Line Note/Comment permission.

Additional rules:

• In the Plus version, a user must have Editable line-note permission to add or change a line note.
• Users with Hidden line-note permission do not see the Note field or line-note FactBox content.
• A measurement line note can only be changed while the related test is Open.
• In Express builds, if permission details can be loaded, line notes are readable and editable.

Where notes are stored

Quality Inspector stores notes in the standard Business Central Record Link table as records with Type = Note.

Measurement line notes

Measurement line notes are linked to the specific IWX QI Test Line record:

• Record Link.Type is set to Note.
• Record Link.Record ID is set to the test line’s RecordId.
• The note text is written into the Record Link.Note BLOB through Business Central’s Record Link Management codeunit on modern Business Central versions.
• When a line note is created, Quality Inspector also stamps metadata such as the current user, company, creation date/time, and notification flag.
• The note text is not stored directly in a field on IWX QI Test Line. The test line is connected to the note through RecordId.
• When a line already has a note, Quality Inspector updates the last note record for that line instead of adding another line-note record.

Page-level FactBox notes

Notes entered through the standard Notes FactBox are also standard Business Central Record Link notes. Their Record ID points to the record shown by the page where the note was added. For example:

• A note added on a quality inspection test card is linked to the IWX QI Test record.
• A note added on an NCR page is linked to the IWX QI NCR record.
• A note added on the Quality Inspection Test Values page is linked to the selected IWX QI Test Line record.

Reporting and integrations

Because notes are Record Link entries, custom reports, integrations, or troubleshooting queries should join or filter on the Business Central Record Link table rather than looking for a note field on the Quality Inspector tables.

For measurement line notes, filter Record Link by:

• Type = Note
• Record ID = <IWX QI Test Line RecordId>

If multiple note records exist for the same test line, Quality Inspector’s line-note field reads the last note record for that line.

Implementation references

• The Note field on the quality inspection test subform calls GetMeasurementNote, SetMeasurementNote, and the large-text edit dialog.
• The Quality Inspection Test Values page exposes the same Note field and the standard Notes FactBox.
• The IWX QI Test Line table contains the storage and retrieval logic for measurement line notes.
• The Edit Line Note/Comment permission controls whether users can see or edit line notes.
