Route Put-aways to Inspection Bins in Quality Inspector for QC Hold locations

You are here:

Quality Inspector can automatically route items that require inspection to designated inspection bins during warehouse put-away operations. When items are received through warehouse receipts, the system can automatically split created put-away lines to direct sample quantities to inspection bins while placing remaining quantities in regular storage bins.  This allows Quality Inspector to support changing the put-away bins directly on put-aways for QC Required or COA required items.

This feature requires a quality inspection test to be created before the put-away is created, because the quantity and sample quantity influence how a line is split.  This feature cannot be used without a quality inspection test to just direct product to a bin.

This feature is useful when received inventory should be physically separated for inspection before it is made available for normal warehouse use. For example, organizations may route incoming purchased items to a quality inspection, quarantine, or hold bin while receiving inspection is completed, prevent uninspected material from being put away into regular storage bins, or use different inspection bins for different locations or warehouse zones. The Put Away to Inspection Bin setting and Inspection Bins setup on the Item Card allow this routing to be controlled for the individual items that require this additional quality step.

Inspection-bin routing can also be combined with warehouse movement Test Generation Rules to automate the inspection process. For example, inventory can first be routed to a designated inspection or quarantine bin, and a rule configured with the Movement Into Bin trigger can automatically create a Quality Inspection Test when the put-away or movement into that bin is registered. This allows the physical movement of inventory to initiate the required inspection without the user manually creating a test. For configuration details, see Create a Test Automatically with a Put-Away or Movement into a Bin in Quality Inspector and Understand Quality Inspection Templates and Test Generation Rules.

Full quantity testing

When a test is created for the full quantity, the entire put-away line is redirected to the inspection bin, and no line splitting occurs.

Sample testing

When a test is created for a sample quantity (when the test sample size less than full quantity to be put away):

  • The original put-away line quantity is reduced to the remaining quantity (Total – Sample Size).
  • A new put-away line is created for the sample quantity.
  • The sample line is directed to the inspection bin.
  • The remaining quantity is directed to the regular storage bin.

Item Setup

Quality Inspector adds inspection-related settings and actions to the Item Card to control how individual items are handled during put-away.

  • Put Away to Inspection Bin – Enable this field when the item should be eligible for routing to an inspection bin when a qualifying Quality Inspection Test exists.
  • Inspection Bins – Use this action to open the inspection-bin setup for the item. Here you can define the Location Code, optional From Zone Code, Quality Inspection Zone, and Quality Inspection Bin to use for inspection inventory.

These settings allow inspection-bin routing to be configured separately for each item and location.

Configure Inspection Bins

  1. Navigate to an Item card in Business Central.
  2. On the Item card Select Related / Warehouse / Inspection Bins (or navigate to the Inspection Bins list page).
  3. Modify the following:
    • Item No. Select the item requiring inspection. If accessing via an Item card, this field automatically defaults to that item and is hidden for simplicity.
    • Location Code: Select the warehouse location to receive items.
    • From Zone Code: (Optional) Select the zone to put items away.
    • Quality Inspection Zone: Select the zone with inspection bins (e.g., a QC zone).
    • Quality Inspection Bin: Select the specific bin to place inspection samples.

Conditions preventing items from being directed to Inspection Bins

The items will not be redirected in the following circumstances:

  • No Item Tracking: If the item has no lot number, serial number, or package number (depending on your Business Central version).
  • No Inspection Bin Entry: If no Inspection Bin configuration exists for the specific item and location combination.
  • No Quality Test Found: If no Quality Inspection test exists for the specific item, lot, serial, and quantity combination. The system used the test information to determine the quantity to divert to inspection bins. An intended use case for inspection bins is during automated test creation. In this scenario, a test would be triggered by an action, such as posting a warehouse receipt or posting production output. At the same time, a triggered put-away would be updated to reflect the need for some or all the items to be placed in a quality inspection bin.

If items are not being directed to inspection bins

  • Check that an Inspection Bin entry exists for the item and location.
  • Ensure the item has proper item tracking (lot/serial/package numbers).
  • Confirm that a Quality Inspection test was created for the item.

Breakbulk

The put-away modification does not affect breakbulk lines in a put-away but updates the resulting place lines as necessary.

Use Inspection Bins for Warehouse Receipts

Update put-away lines to reflect the need for some or all the received items to be diverted to quality inspection bins.

Prerequisites

  • Have run Assisted Setup for Quality Inspector
  • Use a location with require receive and require put-away enabled.

Steps

  1. Configure an inspection bin for a warehouse-tracked item using the instructions above.
  2. Navigate Quality Inspection Templates in Business Central and create or select a template for the test.
  3. Ensure a generation rule exists for the template, is for the Warehouse Receipt line, and the Warehouse Trigger is set to WhenWhse. Receipt is posted.
  4. Post a warehouse receipt for the item (generates an inspection test).
  5. Review the generated put-away and note the bin for the place action (should be the inspection bin with the quantity on the test; any excess quantity should have a put-away place line directing to a non-inspection bin).

Use Inspection Bins for Production Output

Update put-away lines to reflect the need for some or all the produced items to be diverted to quality inspection bins.

Prerequisites

  • Have Business Central version 27 or newer.
  • Have run Assisted Setup for Quality Inspector.
  • Using a location with Prod. Output Whse. Handling set to Warehouse Put-away.

Steps

  1. Configure an inspection bin for a warehouse-tracked item using the instructions above.
  2. Navigate Quality Inspection Templates in Business Central and create or select a template for the test.
  3. Ensure a generation rule exists for the template, the rule is for the production, and the Production Trigger is set to When Output is Posted.
  4. Post output for the item (generates an inspection test).
  5. Review the generated put-away and note the bin for the place action (should be the inspection bin with the quantity on the test; any excess quantity should have a put-away place line directing to a non-inspection bin).

Troubleshooting

If an item is not being routed to an inspection bin as expected, first open the Item Card and confirm that Put Away to Inspection Bin is enabled. If it is not then use the Inspection Bins action to verify that an inspection bin is configured for the applicable location and, where used, the correct source zone. Also confirm that a qualifying Quality Inspection Test exists for the item and transaction being put away.
