Implement Skip Lot with Receiving in Quality Inspector

You are here:

Skip Lot allows skipping automated test creation when receiving batches and automated production.

Skip Lot testing is a feature that works with automated test generation for receiving or production.

Skip Lot testing as a process presumes that tests are completed in a timely manner.  If test creation exceeds the ability for tests to be evaluated then skip lot may not be a suitable process.

Manual test creation does not influence skip-lot testing by design.

A choice to manually create a test reflects a need to create a test for decisions outside of the realm of automated decisions such as external influences or automation that’s not configured.

Two counting methods are supported:

  1. Sequential counting by receipt or production batches. For example, receiving an item or lot in 2 batches would result in a count of 2, regardless of the unit quantity. This is the most common skip-lot counting approach and is suitable for most skip-lot scenarios. If you are setting up a demonstration or are unfamiliar with skip lot processes, select this feature.
  2. Counting by quantity. For example, receiving an item or lot in 2 batches of 10 each would result in a count of 20, and would be counted the same as if it were received in one batch of 20.

Alternate counting mechanisms are available to customize by leverage the Insight Works expression evaluator tool to use custom counting expressions.

The skip lot feature only chooses whether to skip the creation of a test or not, it does not decide to sub-divide tests into other discrete quantities.

The logic is evaluated based on meeting or exceeding a threshold.

For example, if the threshold is to create a test for 10, and 100 are received, skip lot uses that 100 have met or exceeded 10 as the deciding factor, but does not create multiples of the test at that point.

Counting resets once a skip lot step changes to another step.

What is being counted is configured by how the item is grouped, there are two main grouping mechanisms are supported:

Counting by item

For example, receiving an item ‘BICYCLE’ in a batch with two lots would be counted together regardless of the lot number. Use this approach to determine which lots to skip for any given item.

This is the most common approach for most skip-lot counting scenarios.

If you are setting up a demonstration or are unfamiliar with skip-lot configuration this choice will be suitable for most scenarios.

Counting by lot

For example, receiving an item ‘BICYCLE’ in a batch with two lots, the counting would occur within the lot. This approach is suitable for large orders or production for the same lot that occurs in multiple occurrences or over long periods of time but the lot number itself in Business Central is the same regardless of those multiple receipts or multiple recordings of output.

Skip Lot test creation can work with AQL configuration for sampling, fixed percentage, and fixed quantity for samples.

Each skip lot step can optionally influence an AQL level change.

These AQL fields are hidden by default in the skip lot lines subform.

Create a skip lot rule using a 10-5-1 rule (Test 10, skip 5, test 1)

What would commonly be abbreviated as 10-5-1 would mean “Start by testing 10.  Then skip the next 5, then test 1. If the last test continues to be fine then go back to skipping 1”.

This presumes a reasonable rate of completion of tests.

  1. Navigate to Quality Inspector Skip Lot Rules in Business Central.
  2. Select +New (the Skip Lot Rule page opens).
  3. Enter a code and description.
  4. Set Count By to “Occurrence”.
  5. Set Group By to “Item”.
  6. Navigate to the Lines section, and create a new line with the following (Step No. 10):
    • Create Threshold: 10 (for Step No. 10)
    • Action Type: Test
    • Description: Test 10
    • Fail Threshold: 1 (any test that fails for that grouping reverts back to the first step and resets the counters)
  7. Create a new line with the following (Step No. 20):
    • Create Threshold: 5 (for Step No. 20)
    • Action Type: Skip
    • Description: Test 5
    • Fail Threshold: 1 (any test that fails for that grouping reverts back to the first step and resets the counters)
  8. Create a new line with the following (Step No. 30):
    • Create Threshold: 1 (for Step No. 30)
    • Action Type: Test
    • Description: Test 1
    • Success Step No.: 20 (meaning to move back to the Skip phase of this 10-5-1 sequence)

Example walkthrough using the approach of sequential batches:

Goal: Test every two occurrences of receipts for an item, skip the next 2, and then test 1. If that 1 works, go back to skipping 2.

Any failure requires the next two to be tested.

Skip Lot Rule Configuration:

  1. Count by Sequence.
  2. Group by Item.

Skip Lot lines:

Step No. Count Decision Next Step Failure Step
10 2 Test 20 10
20 2 Skip 30 10
30 1 Test 20 10

Example sequence of events, and what the expected actions would be for batch sequence-based counting, grouped by item, for 2T-2S-1T pattern:

Example Sequence User Action Quantity Count for Skip Lot Purposes Result Skip Lot Step Test Created?
1 Receive item A, lot L1 10 1 Test Created for a quantity of 10 for lot L1. Step 10 Yes
2 Receive item A, lot L2 15 2 Test Created for a quantity of 15 for lot L2 Step 10 Yes
3 Receive item A, lot L3 20 1 No test created. Step 20 No
4 Receive item A, lot L4 25 2 No test created Step 20 No
5 Receive item A, lot L5 30 1 Test Created for a quantity of 30 for lot L5 Step 30 Yes
6 Receive item A, lot L6 35 1 No test created. Step 20. No
7 Receive item A, lot L7 40 2 No test created. Step 20 No
8 Receive item A, lot L8 45 1 Test Created for a quantity of 45 for lot L8. Step 30 Yes
9 Test finishes in a fail state. 0 Counter gets reset for item A, step gets moved back to 10. Step 10 n/a
10 Receive item A, lot L9 50 1 Test created for quantity of 50 for lot L9 Step 10 Yes
11 Receive item A, lot L10 55 2 Test created for quantity of 55 for lot L10 Step 10 Yes
12 Receive item A, lot L11 60 1 No test created Step 20 No
13 Receive item A, lot L12 65 2 No test created Step 20 No
14 Receive item A, lot L13 70 1 Test created for quantity of 70 for lot L13 Step 30 Yes

Example walkthrough using the approach of counting the quantity within the items:

Goal: Test the first 10 quantity, skip the next 5, and then test 1. If that 1 works, go back to skipping 5.

Any failure requires the next 10 to be tested.

Skip Lot Rule Configuration:

  1. Count by Source Quantity.
  2. Group by Item.

Skip Lot lines:

Step No. Count Decision Next Step Failure Step
10 10 Test 20 10
20 5 Skip 30 10
30 1 Test 20 10

Example sequence of events, and what the expected actions would be for batch sequence-based counting, grouped by item, for 2T-2S-1T pattern:

User Action Quantity Count for Skip Lot Purposes Result Resulting Skip Lot Step Example Sequence Test Created?
Receive item A, lot L1 9 9 Test Created for a quantity of 9 for lot L1. Step 10 1 Yes
Receive item A, lot L2 2 2 Skip, no test created, because the previous counter of 9 + 2 becomes 11, causing it to switch from skip

Log entry will be 11, and the current counter resets, then adds 2, resulting in 2.

Step 20 2 No
Receive item A, lot L3 1 3 Skip, no test created.

Input quantity of 2, plus the current counter of 2 is a result of 3. 3 has not exceeded the 5 threshold.

Step 20 3 No
Receive item A, lot L4 4 5 Created Test. Input Quantity of 4 plus the existing counter of 3 is 7. 7 exceeds the threshold of 5 causing a step change. Step changes to 30, resetting the counter, counter then restarts at 0, plus the 4. Step 30 4 Yes
Receive item A, lot L5 1 1 Skip. Step 30 5 Yes
Receive item A, lot L6 10 10 Test created. Step 20. 6 No
Receive item A, lot L7 10 10 Step 30 7 Yes
