Create Automatic Tests for Sales Returns Without Warehouse Receipts in Quality Inspector

You are here:

Automatically create tests based on sales returns being posted without requiring a warehouse receipt.

  1. Navigate to the Quality Inspector Setup page in Business Central.
  2. Locate the Receiving section / Automation group.
  3. Select one of the Create Test field options:
    • When Sales Return is Received: Creates tests automatically when receiving a sales return but does not create tests automatically when receiving a purchase order.
    • When Purchase Order or Sales Return is Received: Creates tests automatically for both sales returns and receiving product that is purchased.

The test generation rules determine which templates are used when creating a test. If you do not already have a test generation rule for a Sales Return, you can create a test generation rule for a Sales Line table. You can also use the Receipt Rule Wizard to Create a Receiving Rule.

Restricting Returned Inventory During Inspection

Creating a Quality Inspection Test from a Sales Return is separate from restricting what can be done with the returned inventory. For items that use lot, serial, or package tracking, Quality Inspector Grades can be configured to restrict Sales Return transactions based on the inspection result and status. For example, setting Allow Sales Return to Allow Finished Only on the applicable grade prevents the tracked Sales Return Receipt transaction from being completed until the associated inspection is finished.

These restrictions require the item to use lot, serial, or package tracking because Quality Inspector uses the item’s tracking information to associate the inventory transaction with the applicable inspection. Items without item tracking can still have Quality Inspection Tests automatically created from Sales Returns, but the grade-based inventory transaction restrictions do not apply to those items. Also note that these restrictions apply to the inventory receipt portion of the Sales Return; they do not provide a general restriction on later invoicing of a Sales Return Order after the inventory has already been received.

Example: Block a Sales Return Until Inspection Is Finished

For a lot-tracked item that requires inspection when returned, configure the applicable Quality Inspection Grade so Allow Sales Return is set to Allow Finished Only.  These steps also apply if the item is package tracked or serial tracked.

When the Sales Return is posted, Quality Inspector checks for the inspection associated with the returned lot. If the inspection is still in progress, the Sales Return Receipt is blocked. After the inspection is finished, the Sales Return Receipt can be posted normally.
