Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) Labels

You are here:

For printing UCC128 labels (also known as GS1-128 labels) there are two choices:

  • Use the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) vendor
  • Create custom labels in Business Central

Note: To learn more about the specifications, please see the GS1-128 INFO page.

Use the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) vendor

If you are using SPS Commerce, TrueCommerce, or another EDI integrator, Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) labels can be generated from Dynamic Ship data.

If you are using SPS Commerce, please reach out to them directly via your Business Central partner.

If using TrueCommerce, please see the TrueCommerce License Plate Integration page.

When using EDI, the SSCC is used in the Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) transaction. Depending on the process, you can use the EDI labels, but the labels are usually created when the ASN is generated (too late based on the packaging process in use). In this scenario, we recommend creating the UCC128 labels as a Business Central report and print them from Dynamic Ship (or Warehouse Insight) when required. The only additional requirement is to create the SSCC for the labels versus having the EDI generate them.

For more information, see the Generate Serial Shipping Container Code page.

Create custom labels in Business Central

The Report Layout only contains EDI data, not shipping data, and Dynamic Ship does not include this report by default. Your Business Central partner can modify the sample UCC128 license plate label for use when using Dynamic Ship with a third-party EDI application.

The SSCC number is 18 digits long. The UCC barcode is a 20-character barcode based on the SSCC with a leading application identifier (00). Once an SSCC label has been designed, you must assign a number series in Business Central. We recommend you use the existing License Plate number series in Dynamic Ship (for traceability).

To generate an SSCC, you must have a GS1 Company Prefix. You can find your existing one or work with GS1 to register. Your Business Central partner can design SSCC labels using the resources found in the Sample SSCC Labels page.

The report format varies between each EDI customer, so a separate report is required for each customer. Multiple layouts on a single report are not available unless you customize the page to call the report with a layout ID. You can design different SSCC label layouts for different customers by assigning an Internal Package Report ID and Report Name for each customer layout. You can define each report ID and/or on a customer-by-customer basis in Dynamic Ship Customer Options, and you can set the printing behavior for each customer (manually, automatically, or automatically with a prompt). See the Configure Customer Options page for more information.

For report development, Insight Works follows the standard process for development to ensure the report has access to all the required information and logic. However, all report layouts for base Business Central are expected to be completed by the partner. If Insight Works is required for report layouts, this is done on a Time and Materials (T&M) basis only. See the Custom Modifications – Insight Works page for more information.
